Shavasan (Corpse Pose / Dead Man’s Pose)

Procedure
  • Lie flat on your back with both of your legs together and touch the outer sides of the thighs with your palms, i.e. Simple Supine Pose.
  • You may place a thin pillow underneath your head.
  • Keep a distance of about one foot between your feet and place both of your hands about six inches away from the body, with both palms facing upward.
  • Let your fingers curl naturally like that of a corpse.
  • Now, close your eyes and also make sure that your head is not tilted any side.
  • There should not be any tension in the muscles or feeling of discomfort in any part of your body.
  • Stop any kind of external movement as it is very important to relax the whole body.
  • Mentally chant (Radhey) while inhaling, and (Krishna) while exhaling.
  • Be in this position for a minute with slow and deep breathing.
  • With every breath, be aware of every part of your body and try to relax yourself.
  • Also, be alert to avoid sleepiness, as you may fall asleep while doing this asan.
Awareness
  • On breathing in and out along with the movements
  • On the relaxation of the whole body
  • On feeling the presence of “Radhey Krishna” in your breaths
Benefits
  • Shavasan is a relaxing posture to invigorate the body and mind.
  • It may be practiced either before going to bed, or during, or at the end of the yogasan  session.
  • If practiced along with Subtle Body Relaxation, it helps mitigate both—physical and mental tension.
  • It develops the awareness of the mind by increasing body awareness.
Note: Get into Shavasan as a final position after each Supine Pose in order to relax your body.  You should avoid any external and/or internal movement during the asan as a small movement would disturb the whole process.
